Welcome back Mavericks!
Can you believe that summer is already over? It is my hope that you all were able to rest, relax, and spend time with your families and friends. (: As we gear up for a new year, please take a minute to look around and get familiar with our class website. ***Make sure to take a look at each page as there is important information on each one!*** Tomorrow is our first science quiz of the new trimester! I've attached a file that has the questions that both AM and PM core came up with from our Cornell Notes. Take a look because they may just be on tomorrow's quiz! (:
Happy Monday Mavericks! (:
As we kick off our second full week of school, I just wanted to let you know of a few things going on: Math: We have had our first few homework assignments, and the students took their first quiz on Friday last week. I am in the process of grading them & should have them up on PowerSchool by the start of school tomorrow. Students will be required to do quiz corrections every time we take one, so take a minute to ask them about it tomorrow afternoon. Science: With taking our beginning-of-the-year math diagnostic on iReady, Science started off a little slow this year. However, we are soon picking up the pace! The students will be asked (either today or tomorrow) to conduct an activity at home which involves boiling a pot of water & writing down all their observations. I let them know to check with their parents before starting. (: They also will be receiving their Interactive Readers for Science this week. These soft cover workbook-textbooks can stay at school. Students will rip out needed sections and keep them in their binders as we use them. General school updates: * Friday 9/4 will be our 5th/6th grade Ice Cream Float social from 3-4PM here at school. It is an opportunity for kids to have a sweet treat, listen to music, and get to know other students their age. All they need to participate is to return the permission slip, that they received on Friday, by Thursday. * Tuesday 9/1 there will be a planning meeting for our upcoming tailgate party. If you are new to MMS, the tailgate party is a fun family event that will be taking place on Friday 10/2 this year. There are food, games, music, prizes, and raffles; it is the biggest PTA fundraiser of the year. If you are interested in volunteering or helping to plan it, there will be a planning meeting in the staff room immediately after the PTA Board Meeting. * Monday 9/7 there will be no school in observance of Memorial Day. * Monroe has begun a weekly newsletter update for the school. My name is Alice Oshiro, and I am your child's sixth grade Math and Science (and for some of you, PE) teacher. Although it has only been 4 short days, I have greatly enjoyed getting to know your students more and hope to get to meet each of you in the days to come. I'll be sending out e-mails a few times per month as a small part of keeping in touch with you. In case you didn't get a chance, you can also stay in the loop by signing up for Remind, follow me on Instagram, and check your student's grades online on PowerSchool. All this information can be found on our class website (the link is in my signature at the end of this letter). My door is always open - if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me. E-mail is usually the easiest way to reach me, but we can always talk on the phone or arrange for an in-person conference as well. We have a number of exciting events coming up including the ice cream float social for 5th and 6th graders, Back-to-School Night, the annual Tailgate Party, as well as others! Once dates are finalized I'll update you all. Tomorrow we will begin diving into curriculum, so you can expect daily homework from here on out. A few students still have yet to turn in their pink syllabus signature, their student handbook signature, time capsule worksheet and name tag. Please ask your students and see if they have already turned theirs in. (: Thank you for all your support, and I look forward to speaking with you soon! ***Tambien para nuestros padres que hablan espanol, yo hablo un poquito. Si es mas facil para ustedes, siempre puedan escribirme o llamarme en espanol. Lo siento si hago errores!*** Alice Oshiro 6th grade Math/Science Monroe Middle School msoshiro.weebly.com And we're back! Students, tell me a little bit more about yourself by clicking on the link below and filling out your answers. I'm so excited to get to know each of you more as the year goes on!
